Background
For laughing out loud
In the fall of 2022, under the weight of a potentially dormant recession, huge inflation rates and dazzling growth, the Club (an NPO!) was scratching its head to find a way to continue to finance its mission and activities while also creating opportunities for discussions and reflections on sexuality, gender, and intimacy.
Meanwhile, we noted that the comedy industry isn’t very diverse, with queer and/or racialized comics often having a hard time getting known in mainstream scenes.

Strategy
Worst case scenario, we’ll laugh about it
At Club Sexu, from the very beginning, we’ve been driven by the conviction that laughter and playfulness are effective and destigmatizing ways to approach all facets of our sexualities with hindsight, self-deprecation, and by letting go.
With such a refreshing cast (bye-bye, lineups of exclusively cishet men), Friends with Benefits asserts itself as an inclusive and safe space for uninhibited laughter.

Voices of all kinds
Friends with Benefits is a string of benefit comedy nights produced by Club Sexu. With comedians of diverse backgrounds, sexual orientations, and gender identities, including Charles Brunet, Tranna Wintour, Catherine Éthier, Charlie Morin, Mona De Grenoble and Emna Achour, we offer multiple personal glimpses of sexuality, gender, and intimacy. Guests have carte blanche to present their own set on the subject, so the result is varied and creates a canvas of diverse voices and experiences that are downright pee-in-your-pants hilarious.
N.B. – During the event, a helpline is made available to attendees with the goal of making the space even safer. If someone feels uncomfortable with a given content or situation, they can use the line to speak to an expert.
Results
Help, we’ve created a monster!
The first two editions were sold out in less than 48 hours, which was well beyond our expectations and a clear reflection of the enthusiasm of our audience. Several people who attended the first edition even bought tickets for the second!
The public’s frenzied enthusiasm transformed what was meant to be a one night only event into a signature Club Sexu project.
